For my first trip, I booked a bunk in a sleeper cabin shared with three strangers for $84. For my second trip, I booked a private cabin with three bunks, a sink, and a vanity for $200. Nightjet has three tiers of sleeping accommodations, from reclining seats to bunks in shared and private cabins. During my first European train trip, I booked an $84 ride from Vienna to Venice in a shared cabin with six bunks. A year later, I booked a private cabin from Venice to Vienna with the same train line for $200.

Since I was traveling on a budget, I booked the cheapest accommodation on the train. The accommodation didn't include sheets or a pillow, as it's not recommended for overnight travel, a representative of the train line previously told Business Insider.

I was surprised by how little personal space I had even when it was still just one other passenger and me. Train lovers and travelers concerned about their carbon footprint have a lot to choose from this year — especially in Europe. While some European governments are mulling short-haul flight bans, many passengers are already opting for rail, where new connections are numerous. Nightjet, part of the Austrian federal railway, ÖBB, started running a sleeper train between Berlin and Paris in December, while the French rail operator, S.N.C.F., started overnight service between Paris and Aurillac, in south-central France, the same month. And the Italian rail operator Trenitalia has recently started running a weekly high-speed connection between Rome and the station serving the Pompeii archaeological park. Other new European connections include a sleeper service between Brussels and Prague, coming in late March, and an overnight train between Brussels and Bratislava, Slovakia, expected late this year or early next.

On overnight trains, splurging for a private space is worth the price. In private cabins, travelers get a bed, a sink, a vanity, and sometimes a full bathroom. But when I've booked private cabins on Amtrak and Nightjet, ranging from $200 to $1,000, I've slept better with no disruptions. So I recommend private cabins to all travelers with rolling luggage, a nighttime routine, or a desire to sleep well.

Nazi slogans such as “Heil Hitler” and “Sieg heil” were also heard via the train’s intercom, according to several passengers on the train. “Someone has illegally opened the intercom with a duplicate key and played a Hitler speech over a loudspeaker,” a spokesperson for the rail operator ÖBB told CNN on Monday. ‘Completely helpless’After hearing the broadcast of Hitler’s speech, David Stögmüller, member of Austria’s upper house of parliament, tweeted a video of himself expressing disbelief. “Could you please enlighten us as to why an entire train” heard Hitler’s speech, she asked. Speaking to CNN, Schmidt said Hitler’s speech was about 20 seconds long, followed by the Nazi slogans, and that the recording was on a loop.
